Amused atoms

I am on an Amtrak train heading to New York and I am walking across cars looking for a seat. It is weird seeing almost everybody absorbed in their little screens. I glimpse people doomscrolling through social media feeds, playing video games, watching a movie, shopping online, and the occasional long read. Most place a bag on their adjacent seat or get comfortable treating two seats as a lounge, claiming ownership to an already isolated headspace. Then there are people doing their makeup or the ocassional kid working on a math homework. It is only the elders who tend to be present in their environment, observing late travelers like me (and probably judging, creating stories in their head). These group of people seem to be comfortable with boredom, with being alone in their own thoughts. They seem to be the last generation that participated with the boredom of real life.
